Welcome back to another day at Full Circle Farms in Waynesburg! You might be wondering why we’re sharing this video after planting these items back in May 2025. That’s a great question!
I want to take a moment to share some personal struggles I’ve been facing lately. If you notice the dark circles under my eyes and the limp I’m dealing with in the video, it’s a result of my intense work schedule. I’ve been committed to working seven days a week, often putting in 12 to 14 hours a day, or even longer, with little to no breaks. The pressure of managing every aspect of our operation and ensuring that we remain profitable weighs heavily on my mind. Something had to give, and that was my ability to edit and post videos amid the intense farming and 16-hour workdays. I could no longer mentally or physically continue to complete these tasks, so I made the difficult decision to prioritize sleep. As a result, the videos had to wait.
We put everything we had on the line to get this market garden started, investing over $15,000 of our hard-earned savings. That financial commitment has already been spent, and now we are navigating the daily challenges that arise from it. It’s not just about the business; I’m also trying to keep up with household chores, tend to our cattle, and ensure that we’re properly nourishing ourselves. Every day feels like a balancing act as I try to manage all these responsibilities.
Raising vegetables for a market garden requires considerable effort, and it’s a team effort that always involves collaboration. Even when everything is going smoothly, there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work we all pitch in to handle, such as marketing our products and preparing for the farmers’ market. We work together to keep an eye on pests that may affect our crops, plan for upcoming planting sessions, and manage essential tasks like cultivating, weeding, seeding, and fertilizing. I truly understand how challenging it has been to manage water levels, especially when we’re faced with both excess and scarcity. Despite all the effort we put in this year, it felt like there were so many obstacles in our way. We all invested a tremendous amount of hard work into building fences for the cows, taking care of the garden, and handling the endless tasks of picking, packing, and cleaning. It can feel overwhelming at times, and I appreciate everything we’ve done together. It truly never stops, but we’re in this together, supporting one another every step of the way.
Farming has always been a journey of discovery, but sometimes those lessons come at a high cost. I remember the moment vividly—pressed for time and anxious about the impending weather, I hastily decided to plant onions and green beans together, unaware of the consequences that lay ahead.
In the excitement to get everything in the ground, I overlooked the important fact that these two vegetables are antagonistic. Onions, with their powerful compounds, can stifle the growth of legumes like green beans. As I watched the green beans struggle to thrive, it became painfully clear that my rushed decision had dire implications.
It wasn’t just about a few stunted plants; it was a complete failure of the bean crop. They wilted under the shadow of the heavy-feeding onions, unable to reach their potential. Our garden, once filled with hope, instead became a source of disappointment. The time, the care, and the resources we invested ultimately went to waste.
In the end, it wasn’t just about losing some beans; it felt like losing a piece of my dedication to farming. It was a hard lesson learned—one that reminded me of the delicate balance in nature and the importance of being mindful in our decisions. The experience taught me to respect the relationships between plants, highlighting that in farming, as in life, haste often leads to regret.
